Abstract

AIM: This research aimed to determine the knowledge about safe blood transfusion of third and fourth class students in nursing and midwifery school. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study is descriptive and cross-sectional. It was done with 135 students in third and fourth class in nursing and midwifery department in Adnan menderes University Aydın School of Health in 2008. The data analyzed at the SPPS program with number and percentage values. FINDINGS: lt was determined that most of the students had enough knowledge about transfusion fundamentals and indications, 74.1 percent of students had knowledge about transmission ofhepatitis B, C and HIV virus by blood transfusion, lmost all of them had known it is necessary to stop the transfusion when there is suspected symptoms of transfusion reaction. Al most three-fourths of students had known accurately the acute transfusion reaction findings except urticarialitching. A signifıcant part of students had not interpreted the label information on the bloodbag and infusion time, while one third of students had not known the necessity of compatibility tests before the transfusion. CONCLUSION: It was deterrnined that students had inadequate infoonation about compatibility testing just before the transfusion and their information about transfusion fundamentals was adequate
