Abstract

Twenty cases with brain abscesses who have been treated at our department between 1986 and 1991 were analyzed retrospectively. Twenty-seven abscesses were present in 20 cases. Abscesses were solitary in 15 cases and multiple in five cases. All patients underwent surgery and having drainage except two abscesses. Both of these abscesses were small and deeply localized and so conservative treatment preferred. Reoperation was required for two patients with recurrence and ventriculo-peritoneal shunt procedure was carried out for another patients who developed hydrocephalus. In microbiologic analysis staphylococcus were isolated in two, anaerobic organism in three cases while the culture was sterile in 12 cases. After two months of theraphy with antibiotics, in follow up 15 patients were cured without neurologic sequele, four patients had mild neurologic deficit and one patient died.
